Family

The word ‘family’ means different things to different people. Parents, grandparents and siblings are family. But family can include a tree in your garden which is older than you are or a beloved dog or cat you grew up with, too.

Mayil thinks the world of her Thatha. She loves that he says “he says he doesn’t know when he doesn’t know.” She loves that he listens to her, makes up stories and believes that she is “an intelligent young woman.”

Write to us about someone in your family. What do you like about them? What do you hate? Do you have long chats and big fights? You can write about your brother or sister or anyone else who is family to you. Send them to tulikabooks@gmail.com and we’ll pass it on to Mayil. Doodles are welcome and candy, too.

It Happened Like This

Photographs bring back do-you-remembers. If you’re reading this and thinking of your wall of shame photogiraffes or ones where you were caught stuffing your face or “putting” horns, we salute you, just like Thamarai. (If you don’t know who he is, you haven’t read Mayil Will Not Be Quiet, and all we can say to that, boys and girls, is *Tsk tsk*)

Drawings, on the other hand, can show something that photographs can’t. They can show something that you’re feeling inside that other people might not know about at all. There’s also some stuff you just can’t put in words, right? Drawing helps then.

Mayil often draws in her diary. Here’s a peek:

“Thamarai said that it seems Ma knew…!!! She has been acting very normal. Which is not normal. She should have given me the Ha! look by now. Is she saving it up to give it to me once and for all when I do something wrong next? I am thinking too much. My head’s going to burst. Like this!”

Do you have something that happened to you which you want to share with Mayil? It can be about anything at all. If you can send a drawing along with it, that would be great! Write to us at tulikabooks@gmail.com with the subject: It Happened Like This and we’ll pass it on to Mayil. If you don’t want us to mention your name, please say so and we’ll put it up as an anonymous post. You can also send stuff by snail mail to:

Mayil Ganeshan, Tulika Publishers, 13 First Street, Prithvi Avenue, Abhirampuram, Chennai – 600 018.

So what’re you waiting for?? Get. . .SET. . .GO!

Hi!

This is Mayil and she’s super excited because as you can see, she’s got this starry diary. If you don’t write a diary you should because it’s heaps of fun. You can say anything you like in a diary. Mayil writes about all kinds of things. She writes about things that make her mad, she writes about things that she doesn’t understand and she writes about incredibly blah things that happen because blah things happen, don’t they? She writes silly or gross things too (like how she can see her brother’s nose hair when he laughs hard-hehe) and the games she makes up like Paati on Wheels, which you will be dying to play once you read all about it.

If you like her already, gold stars for you! Keep visiting to know how Mayil got her diary and why she’s got that grin on her face…
